Last week, we learned about the history of the thurifer, and today we will learn about the deeper meaning behind the seemingly ordinary actions. The priest places incense on the burning coals thrice during the Mass, which immediately begins to rise toward Heaven in a thick cloud of smoke. The role of thurifer is one of the most interesting and most beautiful. The thurifer is, of course, in charge of the thurible, the larger metal incenser, which is used throughout the Mass at the Gospel and Offertory especially. Acolytes.

An acolyte is one of the busiest roles on the altar, and is based upon the last minor order of "acolyte" which is one the steps to the priesthood! Torchbearers!

This is our first of the new series about altar servers! The torchbearers are servers who hold large candles, from the Sanctus right up until after the distribution of Communion. We have torchbearers on bigger feast days or High Masses, as they show an extra amount of ceremony and dignity for the occasion. In a sense they are the guards of honour of Our Lord: historically they have been present only during  the time when Our Lord was present
